Safety Audits
The Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997 places a number
of obligations upon employers to ensure the safety of employees
and other persons in the workplace, in case of fire.
Failure to comply with the regulations can result in civil proceedings,
and where people are put at serious risk from fire, criminal proceedings
can result and heavy fines or imprisonment imposed.
The key requirement is to carry out a Fire Risk Assessment
of the workplace. The outcome of this determines the extent to which
other measures are necessary to comply with the regulations.
The responsibility to carry out these assessments rests with the
employer - It will not be done by the Fire Service, but as the enforcing
authority - they may inspect to ensure compliance.
